Why You Should Frequently Clear Out Your Closet

Do you ever look through your closet and think “I have nothing to wear,” even though you have about a million articles of clothing jammed into one tiny space? If the answer to that question is yes, then you’re probably in need of a major closet clear out.

Why you should frequently clear out your closet

Now, I know, giving away the majority of your wardrobe probably doesn’t sound like the answer to your nothing-to-wear problem. But, trust me, it is.

In clearing out your closet, you’re giving yourself the chance to do away with all of the clothes that you have grown to loathe. This, by the way, is why you feel like you have nothing to wear. I mean, nobody wants to wear clothes that they just don’t like anymore, right? This allows you to find the pieces that you really love and feel beautiful in. Moreover, once you have found those bits and pieces you have the perfect excuse, and room for that matter, to go out and buy new clothes to match.

Think about it. You finally do away with all of  your old, unused clothing and in their place are new clothes that you are actually excited to wear. Win, win, right?!

Okay, so I have convinced you to take the plunge–shown you the benefits of frequently clearing out your closet. But, where do you start? How do you go about this project?

Fear not my lovelies! To help answer these questions, I have listed a few tips that I find helpful when I’m clearing out my closet!

1. Don’t be attached.

This is probably the biggest piece of advice I can give you. An attachment to clothes that you literally haven’t worn in years can create huge problems when clearing out your closet. Just remember, the clothes you aren’t going to wear are only taking up room that could be filled with clothes that you love.

2. Take your time.

Going through the entirety of your closet can get overwhelming, especially when you have as many clothes as I do. That being said, take your time with it. Remember that it is not a race. In fact, rushing through it only puts you at risk of throwing away something that you regularly wear–bummer. Instead, try tackling this project over the course of a weekend. Or, do a little every day until the job gets done. This keeps you from drowning in a sea of your own clothes. Plus, buys a bit of time to think about what you need and what you can kick to the curb.

3. If you haven’t worn it this season, it’s probably for a reason.

This little rhyme is something I tell myself when I’m uncertain about different articles of clothing. We all have one outfit that we used to wear regularly but grew out of or simply lost interest in. We tell ourselves we’ll wear them again but never get around to actually doing it. That’s when this rhyme comes in handy. If you can think of a reason why you stopped wearing that outfit, it’s probably time to swap it out for a new one.
